== On NSA Spying ==

In a 2014 article for Vox about the NSA scandal and the spying on German Officials, Fisher wrote: "The US has long denied that spy agencies snooped on Merkel's cell phone. When the story first broke in October 2013, President Obama personally called Merkel to tell her it wasn't true. It was widely assumed that Obama was lying; it now appears, based on Germany's own investigation, that he may have been telling the truth."

"The narrative arc of Merkel's cell phone tap, from widely accepted truth to possibly debunked misapprehension, speaks to a larger problem with the recent NSA leaks. The problem was always that the documents were vague and complicated and left a lot of room for interpretation. The documents were complicated and interpreting them was not always easy. The US government, unsurprisingly, refused to help. And Snowden, for all his idealism and ethics, has been an imperfect interpreter of those documents himself, as have his allies. That has meant that sometimes "revelations" about NSA programs like the tap on Merkel's phone turn out to be wrong, or turn out to be different from how they were first described."[[https://www.vox.com/2014/12/12/7381539/merkel-phone-tapped-nsa]]

However, reports surfaced in July 2015, citing documents leaked by WikiLeaks, which showed that the U.S. spied on Angela Merkel's ministers. In addition, the U.S. has also appeared to confirm that Merkel's cell phone was in fact spied on by saying the cell phone was "no longer" a target. We hope that prior articles can be rescued from the prior, corrupted, database and imported to this installation.

For now the documentation starts afresh. We suggest:

# Create new pages from this home page by creating a link to it [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Starting_a_new_page as shown in the MediaWiki documentation] under the Articles heading below.
#* Or by searching for a topic and starting a page on that topic from the results page if no existing article is found.
#* ('''As more articles populate this wiki, this will be preferred and the home page may take a different form.''')
# Please name things concisely and accurately and consider making new pages if your area of contribution wanders.
# Use the "Discussion" tab to add notes with questions, suggestions, and leads that are not complete thoughts for a given page.
# Familiarize yourself with the [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Contents Medawiki documentation] and [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Formatting format contributions thoughtfully]. Eventually use of categories or topics will be an essential responsibility of contributors as well.
# Discussion of editing conventions specific to this wiki or of tools that might extend this wiki setup should probably happen under the "[http://accupedia.washingtonstakeout.com/index.php?title=Talk:Main_Page Discussion]" tab for this page (the main page) for now.

Michael Morell was the deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency and served as acting director twice in 2011 and from 2012 to 2013.

== On Threats of Terrorism Against the U.S. ==
Morell said the following about warnings of threats of terrorism against the U.S. over the 2015 fourth of July weekend.
"I wouldn't be surprised if we're sitting here a week from today talking about an attack over the weekend in the United States. That's how serious this is." [[http://www.cbsnews.com/news/fourth-july-could-attract-terrorist-attack-says-ex-cia-insider-michael-morell/]]

There's been about 50 people in the last 12 months who have been arrested in the United States for being radicalized by ISIS, wanting to go fight there or wanting to conduct an attack here," Morell said. [[http://www.cbsnews.com/news/fourth-july-could-attract-terrorist-attack-says-ex-cia-insider-michael-morell/]]

However, the quote above is misleading, as Adam Johnson of FAIR pointed out. He wrote of Morell's assertion that 50 people have been arrested for ISIS related activites in the last 12 months: "But one key detail is missing from this graphic: None of these “ISIS arrests” involved any actual members of ISIS, only members of the FBI—and their network of informants—posing as such. (The one exception being the man arrested in Arizona, who, while having no contact with ISIS, was also not prompted by the FBI.) So even if one thinks the threat of “lone wolf” attacks is a serious one, it cannot be said these are really “ISIS arrests.” Perhaps on some meta-level, it shows an increase of “radicalization,” but it’s impossible to distinguish between this and simply more aggressive sting operations by the FBI.
In any event, this nuance gets left out entirely. As I’ve previously shown, in the media’s rush to hype the threat, the fact of FBI-manufactured—or at least “assisted”—terror plots is left out as a complicating factor altogether, and the viewer is left thinking the FBI arrested 50 actual ISIS sleeper cells." [[http://fair.org/home/zero-for-40-at-predicting-attacks-why-do-media-still-take-fbi-terror-warnings-seriously/]]
